It’s still early for retirement—yet here I am, looking older from working part-time.

After the Chongqing coal mines closed, I felt utterly helpless for a while. For those of us born in the '70s, retirement was still far off, and taking on temporary jobs made us look old—our situation was especially awkward. To find work, I ran around everywhere, hitting one dead end after another. But now, I’ve rediscovered what it feels like to belong.

Found “home” again.

After the Chongqing coal mines closed, I felt utterly helpless for a while. For those of us born in the '70s, retirement is still far off, and taking on temporary jobs makes us look old—our situation was especially awkward. To find work, I ran around everywhere, hitting one dead end after another. But now, I’ve rediscovered what it means to feel at home again.
My name is Huang Yong, and I used to be a miner at the No. 1 Mine of Chongqing Yu New Energy. Due to Chongqing’s efforts to phase out outdated production capacity and close all state-owned coal mines, I—having grown up in the mining area—suddenly found myself without a livelihood and felt deeply lost.
Since I started working, I’ve been engaged in management roles at a coal mine and have no other work experience. After the coal mine closed, I didn’t know what else I could do once I left the mine. To make a living, I had no choice but to leave my wife and children behind, depart from my hometown, and travel around searching for a job.
When heaven closes a door for you, it invariably opens a window instead. By a lucky coincidence, I found myself at the Gengban Coal Mine of Guizhou Qingli Group Co., Ltd. Here, there’s no hustle and bustle of big cities, yet there’s a unique rural charm and profound cultural heritage. The sky here is incredibly blue, and the nights are wonderfully quiet—perfect for calming an agitated heart. Most importantly, the leaders here show exceptional care for us miners from Chongqing. They’ve arranged our work meticulously and take meticulous care of our daily lives. This has made me feel once again the warmth of home. Finally, I no longer have to rush around frantically, nor do I have to worry anymore about my children’s living expenses.
When my job was stable in the past, I didn’t realize just how important my position really was. Perhaps it’s only when we’ve lost something that we truly come to appreciate it. That’s why I’ll cherish this hard-earned job opportunity, stay committed to my role, work diligently, and make my due contribution to the prosperity of the mining area and to the enterprise’s efforts to overcome its challenges and achieve reform.
